Topsector Energy Hydrogen-Mobility Workshop in Nieuwegein

December 1, 2017

On 30 November 2017, the workshop “Hydrogen” took place at the event of the Topsector Energy in Nieuwegein, The Netherlands. The workshop (2 sessions) was aimed at a discussion about how to implement hydrogen at a stronger pace in the Netherlands. The different parts of the hydrogen system have been addressed, such as the use of hydrogen in the mobility, domestic and industrial sectors.
The morning session was focussed mainly at the use of hydrogen for mobility purposes. The number of attendees was in the order of 40. People from different parts of the central government, municipalities, industries, consultancy firms and knowledge institutions in The Netherlands were present.
Marcel Weeda was one of the speakers and he described the international context of hydrogen. He used the attached poster. The poster gives a picture of the international context of hydrogen in Europe, in which IEA HTCP is one of the five main actors. The poster invited people to raise questions and I could give some information to several persons about IEA HTCP. The IEA HTCP management summaries were very useful.
Part of the discussion was of course the question of how to enhance the growth of the number of hydrogen refilling stations in The Netherlands. This is the subject of IEA HTCP Task 28.  One of the dilemma’s as described in the report of task 28 (Who is going to finance the HRS’s in the phase of relatively modest utilization of them?) was easily recognized. Suggestions were made to align with the approach of our neighboring country Germany in which the central government together with a couple of big oil companies is completing an extensive network of HRS’s. In The Netherlands we are more in favor of a bottom-up approach, but it is questionable whether that approach is going to work in this case.
I think, the added value of this discussion is that it connects people and urges to more collaboration in order to achieve the shared goal. I am very pleased to consider this meeting also as the closing workshop of task 28 of IEA HTCP.
