Integrated Systems Evaluation

Term:  Task 18 began in 2004.  Initially slated to run through 2006, Task was extended in a second phase through 2009.

Purpose and Objectives:  The purpose of Task 18 is to provide information about hydrogen integration into society around the world.  The specific objectives are:
  • to provide information, data and analysis to the Task members and the hydrogen community in general
  • to use modeling and analysis tools to evaluate hydrogen demonstration projects in participating countries
  • to support additional analytic activities as appropriate, including preparation of case studies from around the world with a focus on lessons learned


Description:  Task 18 Phase 1 had two major subtasks, which are listed and described below.  Final reports are now available for Phase 1 subtasks A and B at Phase 2 has an additional subtask, Subtask 3, which is likewise listed and described below. The Task 18 public website may be accessed at

Subtask A: Information Base Development(Subtask Leader:  Jean Dube, Services Mij, Inc.)

Subtask A provides data and analysis to the hydrogen community and the public in the form of inventory databases and compiled summaries.  The information is being used to perform trend analysis and formulate lessons learned.  It includes:  
  1. More than 200 National Documents (roadmaps, strategies, etc.), all of which are searchable. This database may be accessed via link on the public website,
  2. An inventory of national Capabilities for the participating countries
  3. Descriptions of National Projects
  4. A hydrogen production technologies database
  5. Links to HySociety and other databases
  6. Case studies

 Subtask B: Systems Studies Optimization for the Future

Subtask B seeks to use modeling and analysis tools to evaluate hydrogen demonstration projects or guide their design and assessment, thereby facilitating validation of models and assumptions. The table below lists the project portfolio under evaluation in Subtask B.  The portfolio is comprised of two major categories:  H2fueling stations and Integrated RE/H2energy systems.  Over half of all projects are renewables based; the remainder of the projects are fossil fuel based.

Subtask C: Synthesis and Learning (Subtask Leader: Dr mary Gillie CEng, EA Technology Limited)

Non-technical aspects of systems analysis are the subject of Subtask C, which will develop qualitative lessons learned in demonstration project evaluation. Lessons learned will encompass practical guidance in System Design, Project Design and Overall Performance. Other Subtask C activities include trend analysis, a comparative and technical analysis as well as development of new case studies that continues the case study tradition begun under Task 11.
